Missouri Apple Varieties

Redfree is one of the best eating early apples. In Missouri it is available at roadside markets the first week of August. Redfree may be mistaken for Jonathan because of its medium red color with a smooth, waxy, russet free skin. This apple's flesh is firm with good texture and a slightly sweet, acidic flavor. Redfree apples can be eaten fresh or used for cooking. Like most early season apple varieties, it should be eaten soon after purchase as it has a short shelf-life. Missouri orchardists like to grow Redfree because it is immune to apple scab, cedar apple rust and moderately resistant to fire blight and powdery mildew.
