Activities
C. V. Riley Entomological Society members promote public awareness of entomology through participation in community events such as the South Farm Showcase, Missouri Chestnut Roast, Earth Day, The Missouri State Fair, and Tiger Night of Fun. Club funds are acquired by selling insect collections to area high schools for use in FFA contests (http://plantsci.missouri.edu/housebugs/ffa_purchase.htm). Also, to honor the memory and accomplishments of C.V. Riley, every spring the club invites a prominent scientist whose work involves insects, or some aspect of entomology, to give the annual 'C.V. Riley Lecture in Entomology' as part of a seminar series on campus.
Student members are invited to attend insect collecting trips and participate in "pinning parties" that involve pinning and organizing insects for FFA collection, and usually free pizza for good measure. In addition to service, the club also funds social events for club members. Recent events have included dinners in the District, a roller-skating party, and a visit to a local haunted house.
