Nitrogen Watch 2009 is no longer being updated. Few if any corn fields can still get profitable applications of rescue N. The final version of the N Watch feature for 2009 is archived here.
Rainfall data and my observations suggest that nitrogen loss was again a big problem in Missouri and nearby states this year (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kansas…). An excessively wet spring and early summer created conditions where loss of soil and fertilizer N (especially preplant applications) could be substantial, leading to large yield losses. The maps below show ‘danger areas’ for loss of N and corn yield:
